The birth of the Capital of Southern Cyprus.
As legend has it, Nicosia is linked to birth of the Island when Aphrodite emerged from the foam of the waves and generally compared together.
Nicosia allegedly emerged out of the sea between 1 and 5 million
years ago. The emergence of Nicosia combined with the Troodos and
Pendadactylos mountain ranges formulated the Mesaoria plain. This is
how the island of Cyprus was created.
It has been the Islands capital for over 1000 years, dating back originally to the 10th century, although it does date back to the Bronze age, almost 5000 years ago. it is geographically located in the dead centre of the Island, in the Mesaoria Plain parallel to the Kyrenia mountain range with the unmistakable 'Pentadaktylos' - the five fingered mountain.
It is also the cultural capital of Cyprus, hosting the Seat of Government and Diplomatic centre on the Isle. The city itself presents two distinct faces of the country, the old, original
part of the city, surrounded by sturdy Venetian
walls over 400 years old, and a busy, modern, cosmopolitan
metropolis, which has a population of 171.000 including the centre itself and the suburbs.
There are untoldriches in historical sites encircled in its strong bastion walls, including the Cyprus Museum, containing a priceless and fascinating collection of Cypriot antiquities and art
treasures from the Neolithic Age to the early Byzantine Period.
Following straight on, a further museum, the Byzantine Museum and Art galleries keep on with the fascination of the history of the whole country
Largest collection of icons on the island, covering the period from
9th to 18th century. The Art Galleries contain oil paintings, maps,
lithographs and items of historical significance and interest.
Following on the history vain is the Folk art museum which has a wide collection of Cypriot folk art of the 19th and early 20th
century, including wood-carved objects, tapestry, embroidery, pottery,
national costumes and hand-woven materials.
There are many more places of interest, and a plethora of restaurants and eateries, as well as bars and nightr clubs. All in all, something to do for eveyone, regardless of age or social preference.
