The origins of Limassol.
The second biggest city in Cyprus traces it roots back to the English King Richard the Lionheart. It was sandwiched in ancient times between the main Byzantine city of Amathus and lesser know Kurion. The Byzantines had it named Neapolis which roughly translates to 'New Town'. Richard Lionheart was travelling tot he Crusades in ancient time by ship. His Fiance, Berengaria and his sister Loanna, who was Queen of Sicily where accompanying him, although travelling seperately to Richard on a different ship. The sisters ship was caught up in a terrible sea storm, forcing them to weigh anchor at Neapolis (Limassol). the Byzantine Governor at that time had a strong dislike towards Latin, but did not show his emotion at first, as his plan was to entice the two maidens to shore, then hold them for ransom. The ladies resisted his advances, so he refused them fresh water.
When Richard arrived, he asked the Byzantine Governor for a contribution toward the Crusades, which at first, more than likely through fear, accepted the conditions. Some short period of time later, he then denied the request for contributions, which lead to him being hunted down and brutally beaten by Richard. This had dire consequences for the Byzantine people. There main town of Amathus was savagedly rasied to the ground, anbd the people forced to move to Limassol, making Limassol the most important town in the area.
