The village of Troulli lays 15Km north of Larnaca. The name was taken from the rounded hilltops of the area, which resemble the domes ("troullos") of Byzantine churches.Where the village now stands, there was once a pre- Christian settlements whose inhabitants used to work the bronze mimes, the tunnels of which are still intact today.According to folklore, the god Hephaestus settled in the area being banished from the Olympus for having given mortals the gift of fire. This is not without relevance, bearing in mind the existence of a mine in the area, as Hephaestus was also the god of metallurgy. There is also a quarry in the district of Troulli. |
