All about Famagusta.
Originally named Arsinoe, after the Egyptian Monarch Arsinoe II, Famagusta is the capital of the Famagusta district. It is situated east of the capital of Southern Cyprus, Nicosia. It lies on the east coast in a bay between Capes Greco and Eloea, and lays claim to having the deepest harbour on the Island. It has also been referred to as Strabo, or in Greek as Ammochostos which rougly translates to 'hidden in sand', which how many Greeks still refer its name as. The name has developed into Famagusta, how it is officially known in Western Europe. Turkish Cypriots generally refer to it as
Mağusa. Truly a city of three names.

The histrionics of Famagusta.
Famagusta is has always been, and still is, one of the most important, greatly fortified ports on the shores of the Mediterranean Ocean. Rougly, just to the North of Famagusta lies the fabulous ruins of Salamis. Once, believed to be a great city, it is commonly believed to have been founded in or around the 11th century BC. The beauty of place enticed influences of the many conquering nations -notably the Romans- the city was finally abandoned in 648 AD following the combined catastrophes of earthquake and raids by Arab pirates, when the population moved to Famagusta.
A major influx of Christian Asylum seekers and refugees escaping the downfall of Acre (1291) in Palestine transformed it from a tiny fishing and trade port into one of the richest cities in devout Christian times. In 1372 the port was forceably taken by Genoa, followed by a raid and conquest by Venice (1481), and in 1571 it fell to the Turkish. Under British administration (1878-1960) the modern section, called Varosha, was developed into a thriving and lucrative tourist and holiday resort. After 1974, Varosha was sealed off to the general public and tourism ceased. The Ferry service, whyich came to fruition in 1978 between Mersin, Turkey, and Latakia, Syria, included Famagusta in its run. this service still runs today.
The British empire colonised Cyprus in 1878 Many buildings, streets and areas of landed property where demoished to provide material for Port Said and the Suez Canal.
Famagusta was occupied by the Turkish armed forces and military during the invasion of the island by Turkey in 1974, in response to the Greek-backed coup. The Greek Cypriot inhabitants evaquated to Grecian soils. Consequently, most of the then-modern part of the city, known as Varosha (Turkish: Maraş), was deserted, becoming a closed-off military zone, something which persists even to this day. Varosha is often described and refered to as a "Ghost Town" as it has been frozen in time with department stores still full of clothes, now many years out of fashion and hotels still fully equipped.
