A definiton of the word 'Apartment'.
The word apartment is chiefly an American English term. It generally translates to a room or set of rooms within a larger complex or building. So a family residence contained within the structure of a building containing other family residences. These are usually rental properties, bought by astute business minded people as an investment in bricks and mortar and to generate a further incoming by renting or leasing out either short or long term depending on the location of the property the apartment is situated.
A growing trend in a volatile and price increasing property market is for first time buyer or buyers to buy an apartment as their own residence. The dwelling is bought outright with the aid of a mortgage, or increasingly popular, bought as a co-op or joint ownership. This is enabling younger people or first time buyers to get on the first rung of the property ladder.
If you purchase an apartment as is, then it will probably be left up to the developer of the whole property to up keep and maintain the public spaces, i.e. hallways, car parks, gardens. Some
apartment buildings enable the owners of the apartments to co-own the actual grounds or public spaces like the entrance halls, swimming pools, gardens and car parks. If this is the case, then it is up to the proprietors of the apartments to keep the communal areas in good condition and working order.
