The word Villa has its origins, contrary to popular belief, not to Spain but dating back to early Roman times. It was originally a country house built for the Roman upper class. The ancient Roman author and Philosopher Pliny the Elder is about the first person to document the word villa in his ground breaking chronical Naturalis Historius. It is documented at the time that there were two differing kinds od this building - the
villa urbana,
a country seat which had the easiest of access to Rome within a day or twos' chariot ride, and the
villa rustica
which was more of a rural farmhouse estate, permamently occupied by servants and saved for those ranking high in the Roman legion. These where commonly known as Imperial Villas.

These types of abodes are commonly found throughout the world, and although nothing like the old Roman style building, generally equate to a suburban type dwelling, which are usually associated with countries with a hotter climate and either by the ocean or in or close to some form of plantation.
