Ayia Napa as it is traditionally know, translates into English as Agia Napa.
The title Ayia Napa (Greek: Αγια Ναπα) according to legend, originates from a
Venetian-era monastery of a similar or same name, which was situated in the centre of the town, next to the precinct or town square which today is the hub of the clubbing scene. The word 'Napa' is archaic and its literal translation is "wooded valley". In ancient times the area surrounding the town was covered with dense forest.

The histrionics of Ayia Napa.
According to historians, both locally and internationally, the now renowned original icon was mistankenly happened upon by a hungry hunter chasing after his next meal. When it was discovered the symbolic icon was named the Virgin Mary of Agia Napa. The present monastery, or place of worship was built around 1500, and was constructed around the cave, in honour of the Virgin Mary of Agia Napa. According to local traditionalists, until 1790, no one was permitted to lived within 'close vicinity' of Agia Napa. The first inhabitants who actually appeared and settled were twenty men from Salonica, Greece, who began the villages tradition of fishing and so began the village of Agia Napa.
It has now become far bigger than a village and Agia Napa has become synonymous with clubbing on the island, and has attracted tourism from all over Europe because of the climate, beaches and the specific character of the scene that has built up here.
